Hit and Run Kills Man Helping with Jump Start

Posted by: on December 4, 2011

The driver of an RV was arrested on suspicion of hit and run for allegedly running over and killing a man who had helped him with a jump start in Fairfield, police said.

Rudy Gonzales, 70, of Hayward was run over by the RV in the parking lot of a McDonald’s restaurant on Central Way about 10 a.m. Thursday, said Fairfield police Lt. Greg Hurlbut.

Moments earlier, Gonzales had offered to help the RV’s driver, Michael Wilbert, 52, of Fairfield, with a jump start, Hurlbut said.

Gonzales was “somehow struck by the recreational vehicle” while getting the engine started, Hurlbut said.

Wilbert drove off without helping Gonzales, who died at the scene, police said.

Wilbert was found shortly afterward at a nearby business and arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run. He did not appear to be drunk, Hurlbut said.

A 23-year-old San Francisco bicyclist who allegedly ran a red light and struck and killed a pedestrian entered not guilty pleas today to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.

The bicyclist was  riding north on the Embarcadero at about 8:30 a.m. July 15 when he hit Dionette Cherney, 68, who was crossing Mission Street with her husband.  Cherney, who was visiting from Washington, D.C., died of head injuries at a hospital Aug. 11.
