Popular Bay Area graffiti artist pleads guilty to vandalism charges
“Girafa,” a.k.a. graffiti artist Steven Free, pleaded guilty this week in Santa Clara County Superior Court to two counts of felony vandalism and two counts of misdemeanor vandalism for spray-painting cartoon giraffes throughout San Jose.
As part of a plea agreement, Free must pay $38,000 in restitution to San Jose and the owners of the properties he tagged. He was also placed on three years’ probation.
Prosecutors dropped several other counts of felony vandalism in exchange for his plea. He had originally been arrested in October 2009 on 10 felony counts.
